THE VOYAGE ARCHIVE · THE CAPTAIN'S LOG
DAY 5
A preserved chapter from Viking Voyage II — built around the recovered original Day 5 master map.
CAPTAIN'S LOG · DAY 5
THE OCEAN OPENS BEFORE US.
Forty-eight sailors now carried the voyage west. By the fifth day, the fleet had reached 3,972,538 steps — approximately 2,582 kilometres from Greenland.
There was no road beneath us and no line across the sea. Only the growing distance behind the stern, the continent somewhere ahead and a crew learning what it meant to move as one.
FORTY-EIGHT SAILORS.
ONE SHIP. ONE CROSSING.
— Captain Hákon
